CELEBRATING THE NATIONAL GLASS PLATE NEGATIVES REGISTERED AS UNESCO MEMORY OF WORLD

After UNESCO announced the registration of the National Glass Plate Negatives as UNESCO’s Memory of the World on the 30th of October 2017, the National Archives of Thailand, Sirivadhanabhakdi Foundation together with Thai Beverage PCL took the opportunity to organize the ‘Celebrating the National Glass Plate Negatives Registered as UNESCO Memory of the World’ exhibition at the National Gallery on Chao Fa Road. The show brought together an impressive collection of photographs taken between the reign of King Rama IV and King Rama VII, many of which have never been shown to the public before.

What’s exciting about these photographs is how they depict the lives, places and events from that time period (some were unexpectedly captured) through the views of not just ordinary photographers but important historical figures, especially King Rama V, during a time when photography became highly popular (among the upper class). In addition to the 150 photographs selected from the over 30,000 negatives archived at the Royal Vajirajan Library, National Library of Thailand, which are displayed under the eight topics of the exhibition’s narrative, the collateral activities such as the lecture on glass plate negatives and photography, the glass plate Negatives workshop by Pranakorn Photo Club or even the Chayanitikorn Photo Studio that organized a photo shoot for visitors in Thai traditional costumes perfectly complement the curated story and atmosphere of the exhibition. “Celebrating the National glass plate Negatives Registered as UNESCO Memory of the World” exhibition and all the activities will be held until the 28th of July 2018.

 หลังจากที่องค์การ UNESCO ได้มีการประกาศขึ้นทะเบียนให้ฟิล์มกระจกและภาพต้นฉบับจากฟิล์มกระจกชุดหอพระสมุดวชิรญาณเป็นมรดกความทรงจำแห่งโลก (UNESCO’s Memory of the World) ไปเมื่อวันที่ 30 ตุลาคม ปีก่อน สำนักหอจดหมายเหตุแห่งชาติ มูลนิธิสิริวัฒนภักดี และบริษัท ไทยเบฟเวอเรจ จำกัด (มหาชน) เลยถือโอกาสนี้ ร่วมกันจัดนิทรรศการ “เฉลิมฟิล์มกระจก ฉลองมรดกความทรงจำแห่งโลก” ขึ้นที่พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป บนถนนเจ้าฟ้า ซึ่งนอกจากงานนี้เราจะได้มีโอกาสชมผลงานภาพถ่ายตั้งแต่ยุคสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4 มาจนถึงรัชกาลที่ 7 ซึ่งหลายๆ ภาพไม่เคยปรากฏให้บุคคลทั่วไปเห็นมาก่อนแล้ว ความตื่นเต้นอีกอย่างคือการที่เราจะได้มีโอกาสเห็นวิถีชีวิตของผู้คน สถานที่ และเหตุการณ์ต่างๆ ในสมัยนั้น โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งบางภาพที่เราอาจจะไม่เคยคิดมาก่อนว่าจะมีการบันทึกไว้ด้วยซ้ำ ผ่านมุมมองของช่างภาพแต่ละคน โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภาพถ่ายฝีพระหัตถ์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ซึ่งเป็นยุคสมัยที่การถ่ายภาพได้รับความนิยมอย่างแพร่หลาย (ในหมู่เจ้านายและขุนนาง) ทั้งนี้ นอกเหนือไปจากการคัดเลือกภาพถ่ายจำนวน 150 รูป จากที่มีอยู่อีกกว่า 30,000 รูปในหอพระสมุดวชิรญาณ เพื่อร้อยเรียงให้เกิดเป็นเนื้อหาของนิทรรศการทั้ง 8 หัวข้อแล้ว กิจกรรมที่จัดขึ้นคู่ขนาน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการบรรยายว่าด้วยฟิล์มกระจกและการถ่ายภาพ การจัดเวิร์คช็อปฟิล์มกระจกแบบเปียกโดยชมรมช่างภาพสารพัดช่างพระนคร หรือแม้แต่การยกสตูดิโอถ่ายภาพของร้านฉายานิติกรมาให้ผู้เข้าชมได้ร่วมถ่ายภาพย้อนยุคกัน ก็ถือเป็นสิ่งที่ช่วยสร้างบรรยากาศร่วมให้กับของที่จัดแสดงได้เป็นอย่างดี นิทรรศการและกิจกรรมต่างๆ จะยังมีต่อเนื่องไปจนถึงวันที่ 28 กรกฎาคม นี้
