“PAVA มาจากชื่อของพวกเราสองคน และเราตั้งใจให้มันอ่านว่า “ภาวะ” ซึ่งหมายถึง “ความจริง” เราเชื่อในข้อมูลและเลเยอร์ต่างๆ ที่อยู่เบื้องหลังไม่ว่าจะเป็น สภาพเศรษฐกิจ การเมือง สิ่งแวดล้อม ฯลฯ สถาปัตยกรรมคือภาพสะท้อนของบริบททั้งหมด”
ในเว็บไซต์ของ PAVA architects ระบุไว้ว่าพวกเขา (พชรพรรณ รัตนานคร และ วารัตน์ ลิ่มวิบูลย์) เริ่มต้นทำงานด้วยกันเมื่อปี 2018 แต่ดูจากจำนวนโปรเจ็คต์ประกวดแบบ จำนวนโปรเจ็คต์ที่สร้างจริง รวมถึงการรับรางวัลด้านการอนุรักษ์จาก UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2018 ในสาขา New Design in Heritage Contexts ของพวกเขาไปหมาดๆ กับโปรเจ็คต์ Kaomai Estate 1955 (โปรเจ็คต์เดียวกันนี้ยังได้รับรางวัล Golden Pin Design Award 2018 ที่ประเทศไต้หวันอีกด้วย) ระยะเวลาแค่ 1 ปี ตั้งแต่ก่อตั้งสตูดิโอจึงดูจะสั้นเกินจริงสำหรับความสำเร็จเหล่านี้
“จริงๆ มันบอกเป็นปีชัดๆ ไม่ได้หรอกว่า PAVA architects เกิดขึ้นตอนไหน เราเรียนมาด้วยกัน เติบโตมาด้วยกัน เราเรียนสาขาออกแบบภายใน ส่วนวารัตน์เรียนสาขาสถาปัตยกรรม” พชรพรรณกล่าว ก่อนที่วารัตน์ จะเสริมว่า “พวกเรามีความสนใจคล้ายๆ กัน เราไม่เชื่อว่าสถาปัตย์จะจำกัดอยู่แค่สถาปัตย์ แต่เห็นความเชื่อมโยงของสเกลที่แตกต่างกัน”
แนวคิดในการทำงานของ PAVA architects คงเริ่มถูกบ่มเพาะมาตั้งแต่ที่ทั้งคู่ยังอยู่ในรั้วจุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และถูกพัฒนามาอย่างต่อเนื่องแม้จะทำงานอยู่กันคนละออฟฟิศ สำหรับ PAVA architects สิ่งสำคัญในการทำงานสถาปัตยกรรม คือการคิดถึงงานสถาปัตยกรรมทุกสเกลไปพร้อมกัน และพวกเขาไม่เชื่อเรื่องการทำงานสถาปัตยกรรมแบบเอา form เป็นที่ตั้ง ซึ่งทั้งหมดนี้คงเป็นสาเหตุของการสลับกันไปศึกษาต่อในด้าน urban design ของพชรพรรณที่ ETH Zurich ในปี 2017 ปัจจุบันวารัตน์กำลังศึกษาต่อระดับปริญาโทด้านภูมิสถาปัตยกรรมอยู่ที่ Graduate School of Design, Harvard University
The word ‘PAVA’ comes from our name and it is pronounced “PA – VA” which, in Thai, means “Reality.” We believe in layers of information – economic, political, environmental, etc. For us, architecture is a reflection of these factors.
According to the website of PAVA architects, both Pacharapan Ratananakorn and Varat Limwibul founded their studio back in 2018. However, if we take one look at their various competitions and completed projects as well as ‘Kaomai Estate 1955’ which was recently awarded by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2018 in the New Design In Heritage Contexts categories (this project was also awarded the Mark Winner in the Golden Pin Design Award 2018 in Taiwan), just one year since the founding of PAVA Architects seems too short for the aforementioned accomplishments.
“Sometimes we find that it is hard to precisely state the year that PAVA architects emerged. We studied and grew up together. I studied interior design while he studied in the architecture major,” described Ratananakorn while Limwibul added that “Both of us share the same architectural idea. We don’t believe that each scale of architecture has its own margin that isolates itself from the others. In fact, we always realize the relationship between them.”
PAVA architects’ architectural practice stemmed from the time when Ratananakorn and Limwibul were studying at Chulalongkorn University and has constantly developed since then, even though the two founders worked separately for different studios. The core idea of their practice is to simultaneously consider all of an architectural scale at once while they also don’t believe that architecture is just a matter of form. Perhaps, these following ideas are the reason behind Ratananakorn’s master’s degree in Urban Design from ETH Zurich and Limwibul’s current studies for a master’s degree in landscape architecture at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University.
