HELD BIANNUALLY, UNFOLDING KAFKA FESTIVAL IS AN ART FESTIVAL THAT HAS CONTEMPORARY DANCE ARTIST JITTI CHOMPEE AS THE PRINCIPAL CURATOR. UNFOLDING KAFKA FESTIVAL 2019 เป็นเทศการศิลปะที่จัดขึ้นทุกๆ 2 ปีโดยมี จิตติ ชมพี ศิลปินนักเต้นร่วมสมัยเป็นหัวเรือหลัก เทศกาลครั้งที่สามที่จัดขึ้นในปีนี้ระหว่างวันที่ 26 ตุลาคม – 15 ธันวาคม 2019 มาในธีม KAFKA ZOO และมี venue ในการจัดงานในสองจังหวัดคือที่กรุงเทพฯ และเชียงใหม่
ความพิเศษของเทศกาลนี้คือความชัดเจนในตัวเอง เพราะ (ก็อย่างที่ชื่อเทศกาลบอก) มันตั้งต้นจาก / ยืนอยู่บนผลงานวรรณกรรมของ Franz Kafka อย่างไรก็ดี นี่ก็ไม่ใช่การเอาผลงานของ Kafka กลับมาอ่านแบบทื่อๆ แต่อย่างใด แต่เป็นการเปิดโอกาสให้ผู้สนใจศิลปะชาวไทยได้ตีความเซ้นส์บางอย่างของ Kafka ความลึกลับคลุมเครือและฉากเหนือจริงบางอย่างที่แฝงอยู่ในงานศิลปะหลายๆ รูปแบบของเทศกาล ไม่ว่าจะเป็น ศิลปะเพอร์ฟอร์แมนซ์ อินสตอลเลชั่น ไปจนถึงภาพยนตร์

เราคิดว่าประโยคข้างต้นที่ผู้จัดใช้ในเว็บไซต์ของเทศกาลนั้นเป็นแนวทางในการรับชมงานศิลปะที่ดีมากทีเดียว ไม่เพียงเฉพาะแค่กับเทศกาลนี้เท่านั้น แต่รวมถึงงานศิลปะร่วมสมัยทั่วไปด้วย KAFKA ZOO ธีมหลักในปีนี้ พูดถึง “สัตว์” ในงานเขียนของ Kafka และตัวละครที่มีความก้ำกึ่งจะเป็นมนุษย์แต่ก็ไม่ใช่มนุษย์ ระบบระเบียบที่บิดเบี้ยว เส้นแบ่งระว่างมนุษย์และสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่มนุษย์ที่พร่าเลือนนี้เองที่จะเป็นพื้นที่ที่เราจะต้องยืนอยู่ระหว่างรับชมงานศิลปะจากศิลปินหลากหลายเชื้อชาติที่มาร่วมจัดแสดงผลงานในครั้งนี้
Held biannually, UNFOLDING KAFKA FESTIVAL is an art festival that has contemporary dance artist Jitti Chompee, as the principle curator. The second edition of the festival will take place between 26th October and 15th December 2019 under the theme KAFKA ZOO with Chiang Mai and Bangkok being the designated main venues.
Like what its name gives away, UNFOLDING KAFKA FESTIVAL revolves itself around Franz Kafka’s iconic literary creations. Nonetheless, the festival is nowhere near being a direct translation of Kafka’s works, but presents itself more as a platform for Thai art enthusiasts to freely explore and interpret the Kafka sensibility. The cryptic, obscure, surreal elements are hidden in art works of various artistic mediums and styles featured in the festival, from Performance art, Installation art to films.

The phrase appears on the festival’s official website says a lot about, not just the art viewing experience of UNFOLDING KAFKA, but also other works of contemporary art. This year’s theme, KAFKA ZOO looks into the ‘animals’ in Kafka’s literary works and the ambiguity of characters that are not entirely human, deviated system, the blurred line between humans and the non-humans, collectively forming the in-between space where viewers navigate through and experience artistic creations by artists from various nationalities.
