ถ้าจะเล่าถึงความเป็นมาของ Tang Contemporary Art เราคงต้องย้อนกลับไปยังปี 1997 ปีที่ Zheng Lin ตัดสินใจเปิดแกลเลอรี่ขึ้นในกรุงเทพฯ เพื่อทำงานกับศิลปินจีนที่ช่วงนั้นมักทำงานศิลปะอยู่นอกประเทศจีน จุดเปลี่ยนสำคัญที่ทำให้แกลเลอรี่แห่งนี้เติบโตจนเป็นอย่างที่เห็นในปัจจุบัน คงจะเป็นการขยายตัวของเศรษฐกิจประเทศจีนช่วง 2000s ซึ่งทำให้ตลาดศิลปะจีนเฟื่องฟูจนศิลปินจีนกลายเป็นจุดสนใจของคนทั่วโลก และแน่นอน Tang Contemporary Art ที่เปิดแกลเลอรี่ขึ้นในปักกิ่งเมื่อปี 2003 นั้นคือหนึ่งตัวละครสำคัญผู้อยู่เบื้องหลังการเติบโตของศิลปินจีนในช่วงเวลาดังกล่าว
Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaodong, Hua Yong Ping นี่คือส่วนหนึ่งของรายชื่อศิลปินจีนคนสำคัญในโลกประวัติศาสตร์ศิลป์ที่เคยมีนิทรรศการกับ Tang Contemporary Art “แกลเลอรี่ของเราในปักกิ่งมีพื้นที่กว่า 800 ตารางเมตร ซึ่งมันไม่ใช่เรื่องน่าแปลกใจอะไรเลย การเติบโตของแกลเลอรี่เป็นไปอย่างต่อเนื่องเมื่อเทียบกับจำนวนศิลปินจีน คอลเล็คเตอร์ และการเติบโตของตลาดศิลปะจีนในขณะนั้น” Michela Sena ไดเร็คเตอร์ของ Tang Contemporary Art กรุงเทพฯ บอกกับ art4d
Tang Contemporary Art ขยายตัวอีกครั้งกับการเปิดสเปซแห่งใหม่ที่ H Queen’s บนเกาะฮ่องกง โดยแชร์สเปซในอาคารร่วมกับแกลเลอรี่ชื่อดังอย่าง David Zwirner, Pearl Lam Galleries หรือ White Stone Gallery เป็นต้น “ขอบเขตการทำงานของแกลเลอรี่เช่นกันที่ขยายตัวขึ้น Tang Contemporary Art เริ่มมีโชว์ของศิลปินจากชาติอื่นๆ นอกเหนือไปจากศิลปินจีน” อย่างไรก็ดี ท่ามกลางการเติบโตที่กล่าวมานี้ Zheng Lin ยังยืนยันที่จะเปิดแกลเลอรี่ที่กรุงเทพฯ ต่อไป และปฏิเสธไม่ได้ว่าในช่วงเวลา 22 ปีผ่านมา แกลเลอรี่แห่งนี้มีบทบาทสำคัญในการโปรโมทศิลปินไทยในเวทีนานาชาติไม่น้อยทีเดียว “กรุงเทพฯ เป็นที่มั่นทางศิลปะร่วมสมัยที่สำคัญ เราเคยร่วมงานกับศิลปินคนสำคัญอย่าง ฤกษ์ฤทธิ์ ตีระวนิช หรือ สาครินทร์ เครืออ่อน ที่ประสบความสำเร็จในระดับนานาชาติมาแล้ว อีกเหตุผลคือ ตลาดศิลปะไทยก็กำลังเติบโตขึ้นในทิศทางที่น่าสนใจ สิ่งที่เราพบคือ นอกจากบรรดาคอลเล็คเตอร์ชื่อดังที่คุ้นๆ ชื่อกันนั้น ยังมีนักสะสมงานศิลปะอีกกลุ่มที่น่าจับตามองและจะเป็นกำลังสำคัญของตลาดศิลปะไทยในอนาคต”
ความน่าสนใจของนักสมสมศิลปะกลุ่มนี้คือพวกเขาสะสมงานศิลปะตามความต้องการของเขาเอง แบบที่ไม่ได้ถูกครอบงำโดยกระแสในตลาดศิลปะโลก
“ฉันคิดว่าแกลเลอรี่ก็เช่นกัน แกลเลอรี่ที่ดีคือแกลเลอรี่ที่ประสบความสำเร็จในด้านธุรกิจ และพร้อมๆ กันนั้น ก็ต้องมีอิสระในการนำเสนอรสนิยมทางศิลปะของตัวเองโดยที่ไม่อิงกับตลาดไปเสียทั้งหมด ซึ่งคือสิ่งที่ Tang Contemporary Art กำลังพยายามทำอยู่ในทุกวันนี้”
สิ่งที่ทำให้ Tang Contemporary Art แตกต่างจากแกลเลอรี่อื่นๆ ในไทยนั้น คงจะเป็นเครือข่ายของแกลเลอรี่ในวงการศิลปะนานาชาติ ในทุกๆ ปี Tang Contemporary Art เข้าร่วมอาร์ตแฟร์กว่า 20 แห่งทั่วโลก เช่น Frieze New York, ASIA NOW ที่ปารีส, Art Basel Hong Kong ไปจนถึง Art Jakarta ที่เพิ่งจบลงไปเมื่อต้นเดือนกันยายนที่ผ่านมา
ในปีนี้ Tang Contemporary Art กำลังจะเปิดแกลเลอรี่แห่งที่สองในกรุงเทพฯ นั่นคือ Tang Contemporary Art – VIP Space ที่จะถูกใช้เป็นพื้นที่จัดแสดง permanent collection ของ Tang Contemporary Art ซึ่งล้วนแล้วแต่เป็น master piece ทั้งสิ้น “ที่เราเลือกมาเปิดแกลเลอรี่แห่งที่สองที่สุขุมวิท 24 ก็เพราะพื้นที่ตรงนี้มีความหลากหลายที่น่าสนใจ มีทั้งออฟฟิศ และที่อยู่อาศัย และที่สำคัญพื้นที่โซนนั้นเป็นชุมชนที่เดินถึงกันหมด” ความตั้งใจของ Michela คือการทำให้ Tang Contemporary Art – VIP Space กลายเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของย่านสุขุมวิท 24 ที่เปิดกว้างสำหรับผู้สนใจศิลปะและบุคคลทั่วไปที่เดินทางผ่านไปมา สามารถแวะเข้ามาพูดคุย แลกเปลี่ยนบทสนทนา
นับว่าเป็นการเคลื่อนไหวที่น่าสนใจทีเดียวและการเปิดแกลเลอรี่แห่งที่สองในไทยครั้งนี้ น่าจะเป็นสัญญาณที่ดีที่วงการศิลปะไทยยังคงดำเนินไปในทิศทางที่ดี นอกจากนั้นในปีนี้ Tang Contemporary Art สาขาใหญ่ที่กรุงเทพฯ ก็กำลังจะย้ายจากชั้นสาม The Peninsula Plaza ถนนราชดำริ ไปยัง The River City Bangkok บริเวณถนนเจริญกรุง ซึ่งนิทรรศการแรกที่จะจัดขึ้นที่ Tang Contemporary Art แห่งใหม่นี้คือนิทรรศการ “2.5D” โดยศิลปินรุ่นใหม่ชาวจีน Chen Zihao ติดตามรายละเอียดเพิ่มเติมได้ในเร็วๆ นี้
To recount the history of Tang Contemporary Art, one would have to go back to 1997 when Zheng Lin decided to open a gallery in Bangkok to promote a certain group of Chinese artists who were working predominantly outside of China. The big turning point that caused the gallery to grow strong and steadily was the expansion of China’s economy during the 2000s. It ignited the boom within the Chinese art market and garnered Chinese artists interests from art buffs around the world. Tang Contemporary Art’s second gallery was opened in Beijing in 2003 and played an important role behind the flourishing growth of Chinese artists in that particular time period.
Ai Weiwei, Liu Xiaodong, Hua Yong Ping are among the prominent names in the world of art history who collaborated with Tang Contemporary Art. “Our Gallery in Beijing holds a capacity of 800 square meters, which isn’t all that surprising. The growth of the gallery has been very organic compared to the number of Chinese artists and collectors as well as the proliferation of the Chinese art market at the time.” Michela Sena, the director of Tang Contemporary Art, told art4d.
Tang Contemporary Art sees another significant expansion with the opening of its new space at H’Queen’s in Hong Kong where it shares the space with other renowned galleries such as, David Zwirner, Pearl Lam Galleries including White Stone Gallery. “The boundary in which we operate also expands. Tang Contemporary Art is starting to host shows from artists from other countries in addition to China.” Nevertheless, amidst the aforementioned growth, Zheng Lin is still adamant to continue the operation of the gallery’s space in Bangkok. “Bangkok is one of the important bases for Contemporary Art. We worked with prominent artists such as Rirkrit Tiravanija and Sakarin Krue-on who have had successful careers and great recognition on an international level. Another reason being the fact that Thailand’s art market is growing and moving towards a very interesting trajectory. What we have discovered is, in addition to the famous collectors whose names we’re familiar with, there is another group of art collectors who are moving in a very interesting direction, and are collectively becoming an important force in Thailand’s art market in the future.”
What is particularly interesting about this group of art collectors is they collect works according to their own preferences and likings without being dominated by the trends in the global art market.
“I THINK GALLERIES ARE LIKE THAT, TOO. A GOOD GALLERY IS A GALLERY THAT IS COMMERCIALLY SUCCESSFUL WHILE POSSESSING THE FREEDOM TO PRESENT ITS OWN ARTISTIC TASTE, WITHOUT HAVING TO BE ENTIRELY DICTATED BY THE MARKET. THAT IS WHAT TANG CONTEMPORARY ART IS TRYING TO ACHIEVE.”
What differentiates Tang Contemporary Art from other galleries in Thailand is perhaps the network of galleries it has been a part of in the international art circuit. Every year, Tang joins over 20 art fairs around the world, from Frieze New York, ASIA NOW in Paris, Art Basel Hong Kong to the recently ended/concluded fair, Art Jakarta.
This year, Tang Contemporary Art is opening its second space in Bangkok. Going by the name of Tang Contemporary Art – VIP Space, the space will be used to exhibit Tang Contemporary Art’s permanent collection, which features an impressive number of masterpieces. “We decided on Sukhumvit 24 as the area where our second gallery in Bangkok will be situated. It is because of the diversity of the neighborhood that is home to offices, a residential area and the fact that everything is in a walking distance.” Sena’s intention is to turn Tang Contemporary Art – VIP Space into a local establishment where passerby can drop by, look at the exhibition and have art-related conversations if they wish.
Tang’s second branch is an interesting move and a promising sign that Thailand’s art industry is still doing pretty well. This year, Tang Contemporary Art’s first branch is also moving from its old venue on the third floor of The Peninsula Plaza on Ratchadamri Road to The River City on Charoenkrung Road (word that the designer who designs the space is the same person in charge of the gallery’s space at H Queen’s). The first exhibition set as the debut show of the new space is “2.5D” by young generation Chinese artist, Chen Zihao. Be sure to stay tuned for more updates.
