THE PORTRAITS OF 58 HRDS WHO WERE MURDERED OR MADE TO DISAPPEAR THAT INSPIRES US ALL TO REMEMBER AND CONSIDER HOW MONEY AND POWER CAN EASILY TAKE SOMEONE’S LIFE FROM THE WORLD

เกือบทั่วทุกมุมโลกวันนี้ มีการรุกรานจากชนชั้นนายทุนและผู้ทรงอิทธิพลเข้าไปในผืนป่าที่ดินทำกินของชาวบ้าน รวมไปถึงการทำลายสิ่งแวดล้อมเพื่อผลประโยชน์ส่วนตน และในเกือบทุกเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้น เรายังคงพบผู้คนตัวเล็กๆ ลุกขึ้นมาต่อสู้กับอำนาจและเม็ดเงินเหล่านั้น เพื่อที่จะปกป้องชุมชนและ “บ้าน” ของพวกเขา แต่ก็เป็นเรื่องน่าเศร้าที่รายงานจาก Global Witness ระบุไว้ว่าในช่วงปี พ.ศ. 2545-2557 มี “นักปกป้องสิทธิมนุษยชนระดับชุมชน” ทั่วโลก ตกเป็นเหยื่อความรุนแรงถึง 991 รายและในประเทศไทย Protection International (PI) ก็รายงานว่าในช่วง 20 ปีที่ผ่านมา มีนักปกป้องสิทธิฯ มากกว่า 50 ราย ที่ถูกสังหารและ “บังคับให้สูญหาย” ที่น่าเศร้ากว่านั้นอีกก็คือ เมื่อนักปกป้องสิทธิฯ ส่วนมากเป็นคนที่ไม่มีชื่อเสียงอะไร หลายคดีจึงเหมือนถูกทำให้สูญหายไปจากความทรงจำของสังคมด้วย PI เล็งเห็นความจริงข้อนี้จึงได้จัดนิทรรศการภาพถ่าย ‘For Those Who Died Trying’ (And Those Who Endure) ขึ้น

Almost every corner in the world suffers from the invasion of capitalists and powerful groups of people who exploit the forests. local lands and environment for their own personal benefit And in almost every such incident that has happened, we hear stories of the little people who get up and fight against the power and the money that is behind the exploitation in order to protect their community and the place they call ‘home. The report from Global Witness tragically indicates that during 2002-2014, at least 991 ‘community-based Human Rights Defenders (HRDs)’ were the victims of violence. In Thailand alone, Protection International (PI) has reported that there are over 50 HRDS who were killed and ‘enforced disappearance’ in the past 20 years. The worst thing is that most HRDs who were ordinary people, forcibly erased from the memory of society. Pl realized this devastating fact and put together ‘For Those Who Died Trying, an exhibition of photography by Luke Duggleby supported and funded by Protection International.
The portraits of 58 HRDs who were murdered or made to disappear, among them being Charoen Wat-aksorn, the community leader who fought against the construction of Bo Nok power plant and Somchai Neelapaijit, the former President of the Muslim Lawyers Club to name a few, are placed at the sites where they were killed or abducted, most of which are in the community or on the land where they had lived and lost their lives fighting for Held in memory of the departed, ‘For Those Who Died Trying’ inspires us all to remember and consider how factors such as money and power can easily take someone’s life from the world.
