ART JAKARTA 2026 REAFFIRMS THE ROLE OF CONTEMPORARY ART FESTIVALS AS PLATFORMS CONNECTING ARTISTS, ART COMMUNITIES, THE INTERNATIONAL ART SCENE, AND AUDIENCES THROUGH FOUR KEY HIGHLIGHTS THIS YEAR

Today’s art fairs serve as far more than commercial spaces for buying and selling art, functioning as cultural landmarks, forums for contemporary discourse, and vital ecosystems that connect artists, collectors, art institutions, and the general public to exchange creative perspectives. Organizing an art fair on an international scale must therefore reflect local identity while remaining open to global diversity. For Art Jakarta 2026, the premier contemporary art fair in Southeast Asia taking place this 2–4 October. It reinforces this role in an engaging way through four highlighted sections presented by art4d:
SCOPE: A section supported by the National Talent Management for Arts and Culture (MTN Seni Budaya) under the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, presenting the ‘MTN Market’ project. This platform brings emerging art fairs and local art communities from various cities across the country—including Mini Art Malang (Malang), Artists Art Fair (Pekanbaru), ART HEY (Banyumas), Maa Ledungga (Gorontalo), Hello Goodbye Photo Market (Bekasi), and Watercolor Art Fair (Yogyakarta)—to showcase their artistic innovation and distinct local charm on an international stage for the first time.
SCENE: A space reflecting the strong culture of collective practice that is a defining feature of Indonesia’s art scene. In this 2026 Edition, it has expanded to accommodate 39 participants—including artist collectives, craft studios, and independent initiatives—from across the country, presenting art merchandise, small-scale artworks, and experimental projects that bridge emerging artists directly with the public.
SPOT: A dedicated exhibition area focusing on sculptures and site-specific installations that break away from conventional formats. The highlight of the 2026 Edition is a transition to a new lineup of Indonesian and regional contemporary artists—including Nguyễn Phương Linh (Vietnam, Ara Contemporary), Henryette Louise (ArtSociates), Albertho Wanma & Budi Santoso (ROH), and Angki Purbandono (SAL Project)—who come together to create captivating spatial experiments for visitors.
AJX: A collaborative platform between Art Jakarta and international cultural institutions and art organizations (Art Jakarta X …). This year reinforces strong partnerships through the second year of ‘Korea Focus,’ supported by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism alongside the Korea Arts Management Service, bringing 14 leading galleries from South Korea. It also features Natta-Cita Art Space (N-CAS) from ISI Bali, bringing Balinese contemporary artist-academics to present scholarly perspectives and contemporary works reflecting the cultural diversity of Asia.
