In January this year, The American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) and HDII Jakarta joined forces and put together The Design Camp 2022 to welcome young Indonesian designers. The three month long submission period brought in the total of 48 participants, 28 students and 20 young generation designers.
The event is organized with the main challenge being for the participants to develop designs using the American Red Oak timber, the dominant species found in the U.S. hardwood forest, as the material. The judging criteria are based on aesthetics, usability and marketing possibility with a judging panel of experienced professionals. The winners of the four categories of the competition were announced on March 31, 2022.
First of all. The Best Design for Furniture (Young Professional) goes to Fable Collection by Aryawan Mantra.
This colorful furniture set of a desk and a stool takes inspiration from an Indonesian fable. Designed to look like a crocodile opening its mouth, the desk can be both a bookshelf and a gadget stand. Meanwhile, the deer-shaped stool can be transformed into a rocking chair, making the furniture set a great tool for children’s learning and playing experiences.
The Best Design For Furniture (Student) goes to Kaleles High Stool by Alouyxius Bertrand Cleviandro.
The work is inspired by the bull racing tradition on Indonesia’s Madura Island. The seat is designed to have a curved feature similar to a saddle with details of the backrest where the protruding wooden piece is reminiscent of the bull’s horns while the shape of the legs represents the horseshoe support worn by riders.
The winner of Best Design for Interior Space category (Young Professional) is Baluran National Park Safari Lodge by Muhamad Abdurohim.
The luxury of safari style lodges and staying experiences became the inspiration for the designer’s own interior design rendition of The Bularan National in Indonesia. The layout of the four-bedroom accommodation is designed into the shape of a firefly with American Red Oak and White Oak timber used for the ceiling, following the project’s requirement.
Last but not least is Rumpi, the winner of Best Design for Interior Space (Student) by Margaretha.
With the intention to lessen the economic and social gap among the Indonesian population through the provision of educational opportunities, the designer came up with the project to function as a ‘portable edu-space’ that can be installed in public spaces and is accessible by all. The flexibility and durability of American Red Oak benefits the formation of the work’s beautiful and functional form.
art4d would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone.
