In the current era of turmoil, it is only natural for people to seek an activity that offers true relaxation and escape from all the unresolved problems, even if it is just for a little while. The Sathorn branch of Yunomori Onsen and Spa seems like an ideal alternative for such a brief getaway. Besides a wide range of services it provides, the establishment is filled with thoughtful design details, curated to deliver the atmosphere one looks for when wanting to take a temporary break from the real world.
Sixseven Studio intends for the project to be a space where one can feel completely relaxed as they hide from the chaos of the real world. The project’s functional program includes two buildings separated by a medium-sized garden. Formerly an old apartment, the front building now houses a restaurant, a massage service area and other recreational spaces such as the lounge and the rooftop bar. Such a comprehensive functional program allows users to spend time in the establishment throughout the day, just like Super Sento in Japan offers its clients.
Design-wise, this project is packed with gimmicks coming in the form of diverse textural finishes. The design embraces the aesthetics of Japanese interior design, accentuating the ultimate spa experience with the finishing details, such as the gradual transition of textural coarseness and colors found at the reception area as well as the sense of enclosure brought about by bamboo patterned concrete and the use of dark wood. Meanwhile, the interior space of the onsen or massage rooms contains a more refined scale with the use of a lighter color tone, creating a warm, casual vibe. The program reaches the finale at the rooftop bar decorated with mosaic tiles and a bamboo ceiling. It is also the part of the program where users are granted access to the view of the Mahanakhon building situated not too far away.
The onsen and massage rooms require the highest level of privacy, hence a complete enclosure by walls and partitions. From the name Yunomori, which means taking a bath in the middle of a forest garden, the design incorporates nature found outside into the interior space with the help of openings, allowing natural air and light to circulate the area. The negative space at the courtyard between the two buildings also brings natural light and elements into the interiors of both buildings. Thinking about Yunomori Onsen and Spa, the urge to bathe in the onsen and experience that feeling of pure relaxation is growing by the minute now.
