The BlueScope Design Award offers a platform for architects and designers to showcase their innovative use of metal-coated and color-coated steel, as well as metal sheet materials in architectural designs. This contest, organized by NS BlueScope (Thailand) Ltd. in collaboration with the Association of Siamese Architects under Royal Patronage, promotes a variety of building design ideas and methodologies that incorporate metal sheet materials while aiming to enhance both the aesthetic appeal and sustainable utility of buildings. The competition plays a pivotal role in transforming the perception of steel from a simple industrial material to a sophisticated element suitable for innovative architectural designs.

‘Steel in Style Thailand’ is a special publication, presented in the form of a magazine and dedicated to showcasing architectural designs that skillfully incorporate BlueScope’s metal sheet materials as either fundamental or focal elements. Released by NS BlueScope (Thailand) Ltd. as its debut issue, the magazine offers a detailed exploration of diverse projects that garnered the BlueScope Design Award in the years 2021 and 2022. Spanning more than eight projects across various typologies—from residential and commercial buildings to non-commercial structures—it meticulously traces the evolution from initial design concepts to the innovative use of metal sheets. This publication not only highlights the integration of these materials but also champions their role in pushing the boundaries of architectural design, offering fresh interpretations and ensuring sustained, long-term functionality.

The showcased residential projects include innovative designs from Studio Sifah and Housescape Design Lab. In the commercial realm, standout projects by AOMO (Architecture of my own), Architects 49 (Phuket), and Office AT illustrate the transformative potential of metal sheets. Moreover, the magazine features the architectural finesse of Only Human Studio in church design, Ativich Studio’s engineering council building, and The Foundry Building at the Royal Thai Naval Dockyard, crafted by the Naval Public Works Department’s architecture team, showcasing the material’s adaptability to various architectural demands.

This special edition does more than just collect and convey detailed information about the competition-winning projects; it also offers a glimpse into the creative processes of various architectural firms. These firms are adept at reimagining the use of metal sheet materials, ingeniously adapting them to meet both the imaginative demands and the evolving technological needs of project owners. The publication is richly illustrated with photographs and architectural plans, broadening its appeal to an audience that spans architects, designers, engineers, project owners, contractors, students, and the general public. Serving as a vital resource, it provides both inspiration and specific information on the varied applications and specifications of metal sheet materials, with each project thoroughly detailing how the BlueScope steel was utilized.

‘Steel in Style Thailand’ acts as an exciting milestone, reshaping our entrenched perceptions and recollections of steel as merely an industrial material. It unfolds a new chapter of a lively and intriguing journey, demonstrating the visions and abilities of architects in transforming metal sheets into modern and visually appealing architectural elements.
