Another design studio with an interesting design characteristic, Atelier 2+ has two founders (Ada Chirakranont and Worapong Manupipatpong) both with backgrounds in interior design. This explains why Atelier 2+’s approach toward space is different, especially in the way that they question the ‘words’ that divide one certain genre of design from another and, for example, whether architecture can be viewed as sculpture or a product can be perceived as a sculptural work. Such questions bring Atelier 2+’s works the element of ambiguity that interestingly calls for users’ interpretations.
art4d: What is creativity to you?
Atelier 2+: It’s a concept or an idea that differentiates itself from the social norms and creates new positive things for the society. While such has to be based on reality, it may be conceived from the way a certain thing is viewed from an unprecedented aspect.
art4d: What do you wish you would have told yourself 10 years ago?
Atelier 2+: Apart from design, try to expand your interests to other things like politics, economy, business, society and technology because we’re starting to understand now that everything is interconnected.
art4d: What is your opinion on labeling an artist and a designer according to their gender, do you think such categorization will become a problem and is it a point of view that follows the conventional notion of binary opposition?
Atelier 2+: I never think it is negative. But for me, the work of a male or a female has its own charm. There are many works of art by women that I think men couldn’t do. On the other hand, maybe women too.
Atelier 2+ เป็นสตูดิโอออกแบบที่มีคาแร็คเตอร์การทำงานที่น่าสนใจ ด้วยการมีพื้นฐานด้านการออกแบบภายในของทั้งคู่ (อดา จิระกรานนท์ และ วรพงศ์ มนูพิพัฒน์พงศ์) ทำให้ Atelier 2+ มีมุมมองต่อ “พื้นที่” แตกต่างออกไป โดยเฉพาะการตั้งคำถามกับ “คำ” ที่เป็นเส้นแบ่งประเภทงานออกแบบ ว่าจะมองว่างานสถาปัตยกรรมเป็นงานประติมากรรม หรือกลับกันว่าจะมองงานโปรดักท์เป็นงานประติมากรรมได้หรือไม่ การตั้งคำถามแบบนี้ทำให้งานออกแบบของ Atelier 2+ มีความก้ำกึ่ง และเรียกร้องการตีความจากผู้ใช้งานได้อย่างน่าสนใจ
art4d: สำหรับคุณแล้ว คำว่า “สร้างสรรค์” คืออะไร
Atelier 2+: แนวความคิดที่แตกต่างจากขนบธรรมเนียมที่ทุกคนทำตามๆ กันในสังคม เป็นแนวคิดที่สร้างสิ่งใหม่ๆ ที่ดีให้กับสังคม และอยู่บนพื้นฐานของความเป็นจริง อาจเกิดขึ้นจากการมองอะไรในมุมอื่นๆ แง่อื่นที่คนส่วนใหญ่ไม่เห็น
art4d: อยากบอกอะไรกับตัวเองเมื่อ 10 ปีก่อน
Atelier 2+: อยากบอกตัวเองให้มีความสนใจในเรื่องอื่นๆ ด้วย นอกจากเรื่องการออกแบบ ทั้งการเมือง เศรษฐกิจ ธุรกิจ สังคม เทคโนโลยี เพราะเราเริ่มเข้าใจว่าทุกๆ อย่างมันเชื่อมโยงกัน
art4d: คิดอย่างไรกับ label ศิลปินหญิง/ศิลปินชาย หรือ ดีไซเนอร์หญิง/ดีไซเนอร์ชาย คิดว่าการแบ่งแยกแบบนี้เป็นปัญหา และยังเป็นการมองที่ยังติดอยู่กับวิธีคิดแบบคู่ตรงข้ามแบบเดิมๆ หรือไม่?
Atelier 2+: ส่วนตัวไม่เคยคิดว่าเป็นเรื่อง negative แต่กลับคิดว่างานของผู้หญิงและผู้ชายมีเสน่ห์ต่างกัน มีหลายๆ งานที่ทำโดยผู้หญิงแล้วเรารู้สึกว่าผู้ชายทำยังไงก็ไม่สามารถออกมาได้แบบนี้ ในทางกลับกันก็เช่นกัน
