In 2021, non-profit organization, Aoyama Design Forum (ADF) together with Milano Salone (Salone Internazionale del Mobile) widely known Milan Design Week, put together “ADF Milano Salonne Design Award 2022,” with Best Performance Award and Outstanding Performance Award given to the winning works.

The design theme of the award ‘re_’ gives designers a full freedom of interpretation and application such as reBORN,’ ‘reCYCLE,’ ‘reNOVATION,’ and many other possibilities, welcoming a wide range of entries from furniture to architecture.

The four members of the judging panel select the winners based on Innovation, Originality, Extensibility, Functionality and Communication space as the judging criteria. The awards are given to one winner of Best Performance Award  and two winners of Outstanding Performance Award. The winner of the Best Performance category will be given USD 10,000 prize money and the opportunity to exhibit their project at Milan Design Week 2022.

The winners of three awards were announced on January 24th, 2022 while additional details about the designers and the projects were later revealed as follows:

Best Performance Award

“THE BEAUTY OF WASTING” by Lisa Ogawa and Tomomi Kawashima

Refining the form

The two designers take users on a journey to explore nature’s fascinating charm through the the rigidity and coldness of ‘stones.’ The pieces from the collection, which are common household objects, are created into a series of gray-colored organic forms. The ‘stones’ are designed into everyday objects that people use of a regular basis and recyclable even broken or destroyed. Simple yet timeless, the work is realized to be easy to use while interpreting the theme into a design with a clear and straightforward message.

Outstanding Performance

“FEEL YOU” by Futa Kobayashi

Reimagining our space

This movable architecture is a space that grants users an oppurtunity to readjust each of their own ‘distance.’  Every human being naturally desires a private space. We make ways for people walking pass us because we can sense their personal distances. The designer materializes such feelings into tangible tactility of ‘nodes’ and ‘lines.’ When connecting the nodes (wooden joints) and lines (strings of rope) together, new distances are created for users to expereince what they find comfortable and uncomfortable.

“OUTSIDE/INSIDE” by Gaurav Wali and Yashika Munjal

Rethinking the boundary

“OUTSIDE/INSIDE” is both the name and key question behind the conception of the work. Interpreting the two words through a vase, which is an object that clearly separates the inside from the outside, is challenging and interesting in and of itself. The Indian design duo works on their own personal challenge of recreating the experience of living at the foot of the Himalayas with the smell of pine forest and sounds of the wind and rustling leaves. The sentiment leads to the use of pine needles as the principal material, creating a unique and functional design that renders diverse aesthetic possibilities when used with other objects.
