Whoever has had a chance to check out Bangkok Design Week 2020 would have probably noticed the mint green pavilion in front of the Central Post Office building and wondered what the visually striking structure really was.
Titled, VESPA PLAY OBJECTS, the pavilion is essentially ‘VESPA PLAYGROUNDS’ where Vespiario (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the official importer and distributor of Vespa in Thailand joined forces with architectural mastermind, Imaginary Objects for a collaborative project that takes on a new approach to playground design.
‘VESPA PLAYGROUNDS’ is interesting for the way that the design uses the fairly limited space to enable visitors of all age groups to diversely interact and engage with the space, allowing them to enjoy light physical exercises. For example, the rope tunnel that invites one to crawl and explore the space at the top of the structure, as well as how the central courtyard of the pavilion serves as a nice resting area for people to take a brief escape from the glaring sunlight. The swings and benches made of old scooter tires reflect ‘VESPA PLAYGROUNDS’ intention to incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly developments to its design process.
The 3 editions of ‘VESPA PLAYGROUNDS’ designed specifically for the event are installed in 3 different venues, located in different parts of Bangkok (the front area of the Central Post Office, The Old Siam Shopping Mall and ACMEN Ekamai Complex) with each edition bearing its own distinctive structural and spatial characteristics as well as aesthetic details. What’s particularly cool about the playgrounds are the fact that they can be physically moved, and after the 9-day duration of Bangkok Design Week 2020 is over, the 3 editions of the playgrounds will be relocated and reinstalled in 3 public parks around Bangkok. ‘VESPA PLAYGROUNDS’ will certainly be bringing the fun and creative spirit, not only to the spaces of which they will be a part of, but to the people, especially the young users, who will be able to have fun and exercise their imaginations through their interactions with these novel, beautiful looking play spaces.
