In this day and age, can we still expect originality from an everyday object such as a lamp? Every time a new lamp gets redesigned, developed and released into the market, the question always comes to mind. It is probably also the first question from which Dyson, the Britain-based innovator of a technologically advanced and innovative product, thought of to develop their new lamp, Dyson Lightcycle Morph™, only two years after the launch of its previous model, Dyson Lightcycle™.
One of the elements Dyson has always prioritized is the ‘light quality,’ the feature that the brand has further developed for the new model. art4d had a chance to talk with Dyson’s product development team (through ZOOM) in early November. From that conversation, the Dyson team emphasized the indivisible connection between light and the human body and how our body clock works and corresponds with daylight. Whether in the active or resting mode, our body operates in direct relation to sunlight. If you still can’t imagine how, think of the different sensations you get while waking up to natural light and neon tube’s artificial light.
With such realizations in mind, Dyson has invented a system that helps control the light intensity by referencing different areas’ varying lighting temperatures from the first until the last light of day. Users can access the Dyson Link application to set the time zone, allowing over 90% of the time in a day we spend in indoor spaces to have the lighting ambiance that corresponds with the outside world’s daylight algorithm. This same application enables users to adjust the lighting mode to suit the occurring activity such as reading, resting, working that requires extra meticulousness, or waking up. The application can calculate the lighting intensity to fit best with the activity one is doing. Dyson Link can also register a user’s age for Dyson Lightcycle Morph™ to automatically calculate the intensity level that is the most appropriate for users of various age groups. Additionally, Dyson Lightcycle Morph™ comes with the LED bulb that offers up to a 60-year shelf life thanks to the cooling pipe technology, a vacuum-sealed copper tube that draws heat away, offering a non-stop, energy-free cooling cycle.
The functions mentioned above are nothing new for Dyson, considering how it has continually developed innovative features for its previous lamps. Nevertheless, it is the design of Dyson Lightcycle Morph™ that we find particularly interesting, considering the more casual-looking form that can genuinely maximize the lamp’s utility.
“With Dyson Lightcycle™, we had taken inspiration from the drawing table, whereas Dyson Lightcycle Morph™’s design process began with our research on the many different formats of household lamps currently available in the market as well as being based on user behaviors.
And that is why Dyson Lightcycle Morph™ possesses much more diverse functions, from the essential feature as a task light to ambient light. It also comes with an ability to serve as an indirect light source when directed to a wall or a ceiling and a feature light that renders localized lighting for exhibited objects in exhibition spaces.
Everything is possible thanks to the head light that has the ability to rotate 360 degrees. Not only that, the component that Dyson refers to as the Ambient Stand is perforated with nearly 5,000 apertures, when it is magnetically attached with the light head, it creates ambient light with incandescent orange that is ideal for relaxation.
Unfortunately, we cannot elaborate on all the functions in this article. We’re pretty sure that the faithful followers of Dyson feel similarly to us about the consistent standard of the brand’s innovation, particularly the in-depth developments and novel user experiences that functionally coincide with people’s contemporary lifestyles. Who knows, we may get to see Dyson develop a lamp with a disinfectant feature. We can’t wait to see what Dyson will have in store for us next year.
