On May 16th, 2024, art4d, in partnership with the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), curated the Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon Bangkok 2024. Anchored by the theme ‘Unlocking Creative Potential: Values, ideas and Attitudes that Shape a New Design Territory for a Better World,’ the event brought together four distinguished winners of the 2023 Golden Pin Design Award (GPDA). The designers unveiled the creative processes behind their award-winning works, offering Bangkok’s design community a peek into the international design currents that shape their practices.
In the dialogue following the seminar, art4d had a brief conversation with each of the celebrated designers from Thailand and Taiwan, including Oliver Lin, Vice President of TDRI. Lin made some interesting observations on the marked differences between the Thai and Taiwanese design industries, noting that while Thai designs are often vibrant and craft-based, Taiwanese designs tend to be more modern and innovative, reflecting the country’s strong technological capabilities. This dichotomy not only enriches the dialogue at Golden Pin Salon Bangkok but also elevates it as a pivotal annual event in the design calendar.
During the exchange, Taiwanese designers Chen Wei and Johnason Lo shared their sense of accomplishment following their GPDA recognition, highlighting the award’s varied categories—product design, communication design, spatial design, and integration design, which form a diverse platform that showcases the wide range of creativity to the international audience.
From Thailand, Chatpong Chuenrudeemol remarked on the Golden Pin Design Award (GPDA) — an accolade with global reach yet deeply rooted in Taiwan and a region that shares nuanced cultural commonalities with Thailand. He articulated design as a universal language, one that surpasses mere words. Yet, he noted, certain designs target specific demographics, necessitating a shared cultural lens to accurately convey the intended messages. Krit Phutpim reflected on the notion of a global citizen, observing that despite the regional differences, this concept is gradually dissolving the boundaries between local and global design narratives, fostering a broader, more inclusive appreciation of design.
Following the discussions with the five creative individuals that marked the conclusion of Golden Pin Salon Bangkok 2024, art4d also had the opportunity to sit down and talk with numerous professionals from various sectors within Thailand’s design community. Insights from these discussions will be detailed in an upcoming article, so stay tuned.
