After announcing the 45 works that were qualified as the Design Mark Winners of Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2019 in August, the design award held for Huaren-speaking designers finally selects its 7 finalists, one with work from the Product Design category, five from the Communication Design category and 1 from the Integration Design category. The 7 concept designs will be competing for Best Design Award alongside the 64 finalists in the Golden Pin Design Award 2019 and the designated date for the final announcement as well as the award ceremony will be on the 5th of December.

Having  noticed the absence of architectural and spatial design projects from this year’s finalists of Golden Pin Concept Design Award with  only works from the product design, communication design and integration design category that made it to the final, we think it’s likely because  this year’s award puts its focus on the designs that engage and reflect environmental and social issues. Understandably, works of product and communication design are more tangible and accessible in nature, when compared to a speculative design concept in the Spatial Design category.

Among the comments made by the jury whose members include design specialists from the founder of bod design corp. namely David Wang to others including, Wei-Hsiung Chan, the founder of Business Next Magazine, an interesting point is made with the focus that seems to pay extra interest and appreciation on the ‘self-discovery’ concept. This issue can be further expanded and explored into something bigger such as social problems, which is why it’s interesting to see the three animations that made it to the final in the Communication Design category this year, which are all created by designers from Main Land China. Each of the works is not only intriguing for its delivered creativity in the form of moving images, but also for the way it wittily discusses certain social issues from domestic violence to alienation in urban society.

Aside from the works by Huaren-speaking designers (mostly from China and Taiwan), the only other work selected as one of the finalists of Golden Pin Concept Design Award 2019 from the Integration Design category, was created by a presumably fluent Huaren speaker—from Germany. If you would like to find out more about Jakob Kilian’s mechanic arm, “Unfolding Space” and the work from the other 6 finalists, here’s some of the information we’ve gathered.

THE 7 FINALISTS OF BEST OF GOLDEN PIN CONCEPT DESIGN AWARD 2019

SOUND LAB / Product Design
Po-Han Wu and Min-Shuo Hsu (Taiwan)

Believing that standardized education is narrowing children’s imagination, the designers creates a DIY music workshop that consists of a toolkit of pipes, valves, and 3D printed parts to stimulate the children’s imagination, allowing for children to make their own musical instruments that produce unique sounds. It proves that children don’t need textbooks to learn and be creative.

Weapon Font / Communication Design
Tin-Han Lin (Taiwan)

This Mandarin Chinese display font is inspired by the form of swords from the ancient Chinese Warring States period (475-221 BC), and the preceding Spring and Autumn period (771-476 BC). Designed to have a steady structure and sharp edges, it is perfectly suited for use on titles of computer games, films, and other publications related to war in the ancient world.

Chuan Dao Tourism Sightseeing Ticket Design / Communication Design
Jui-Hung Weng, Ya-Ling Wang, You-Ning Hou, and Fang-Yu Cao (Taiwan)

Through intricately detailed illustrations, these tickets capture the spirit of popular landmarks and locations that can be visited by train in Taiwan. The designers emphasized signifiers such as rivers, mountains, and bird species in order to visually communicate the natural beauty in these tourist destinations.

«swaddle» / Communication Design
Yu-Jiao Hu, Fei-Fei Li, and Xiao-Han Shen (China)

This short film tells the story of a working-class girl, growing up in modern day China, who is forced to give up on her dreams of becoming a writer. The characters and background layouts are beautifully illustrated by hand, adding a touch of empathy and emotion to this thought-provoking narrative.

Deadline / Communication Design
Yi-Meng Li (China)

“There are so many pressures and temptations in modern life that most people have to be locked in the narrow space and run for their lives. Gradually they become empty bodies, and lost themselves. Call on people to break through themselves, return to their nature, to pursue their original heart” Deadline is a short film set to the song ‘The Call’ by Belgian indie band Dan San.

primary / Communication Design
En-Tin Chen and Ya-Qiong Li (China)

Featuring exquisite figurines and miniature settings, this stop motion film portrays the life of an odd-looking chicken who, by removing its beaks and feathers, disguises itself as a woman in order to live in human society. As time goes by, it comes into contact with another disguised chicken; they both realize that together they can be who they really are. With its warm narrative and a happy ending, primary teaches us to be happy with whom we are; not to live in shame and loneliness.

Unfolding Space / Integration Design
Jakob Kilian (Germany)

Unfolding Space enables its user to see with their hands. A 3D depth sensor takes readings and projects patterns of vibration onto the user’s hand; the location of a vibration depicting an object relative position in space, and the strength of vibration representing its distance from the user. It is designed to help people with visually impairments to interactively explore their surroundings and orient themselves in unfamiliar environments.
