Having closed its doors for a while, the Singapore Art Museum (SAM), one of the region’s most significant contemporary art institutions, has announced that the renovation will be completed in 2023, and art4d had a peek at its design.
Designed by SCDA Architects, the new building’s, with their deft use of glass and aluminum composite, new extension part would look like it pushes out of the original building. An architect informs that SAM’s total space will expand by 30 percent, and both the width and height of galleries will substantially increase. The museum’s public area will also be extended for additional interaction with the visitors.
While the reopening has been delayed for almost two years, we have to keep in consideration the special care needed for a renovation of such a historic building. In the meantime, SAM staff members are busy planning ahead the exhibitions and activities, in co-operation with, for example, Malaysia’s Ilham Gallery and Hong Kong’s Tai Kwun. For now, art lovers like us will just have to wait.
