(For Thai, press here)
WHO
My name is Sorawit Opapongphun (Mark).
WHAT
I graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. I used to work as an in-house graphic designer for a hotel for a year before quitting. I’ve been a freelancer for two years now, working under the moniker ‘itemmm.’
WHERE
I haven’t set up a proper office and am currently working at home.
WHEN
I’m two years into my career as itemmm.
WHY
The name itemmm originates from my love for gaming. I particularly like the word item, while the additional ‘mm’ is me attempting to create a sense of identity for the brand, and it looks like the sound of the word is dragged on a bit, so it sounds kind of fun and playful. I created itemmm because I want to build my own brand and to work on projects and grow until I am able to run my own company one day.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE CREATIVITY?
Personally, I’ve always liked drawing cute comics, and minimal Japanese design is my favorite style. I’ve created many mascots in projects I’ve done, but I have no problem working on a luxurious and elegant project.
DESCRIBE YOUR PRACTICE IN THREE WORDS
Attentive | Passionate | Action-orientated
WHERE DO YOU GO, OR WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU GET STUCK ON A PROJECT?
I tend to have a short attention span. I can hardly concentrate on one task for a long time. I can work up to 2-3 hours at most, and then I have to get up and walk around the room or get something to eat. That’s how I am when I have creative blocks.
WHAT PROJECT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?
I’d say the latest branding and packaging design I worked on for ‘Pan Pan.’ I worked with the brand from the beginning when they had only the name until the products were launched. I’ve been working with this client for many years, so everything tends to work like clockwork between us, and they understood the concept I came up with really well.
IF YOU COULD INVITE ANY CREATIVE OUT FOR COFFEE, WHO WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY?
I’m still at an early stage of my journey as a designer, so I think I would like to opportunity to talk with Somchana Kangwarnjit of Prompt Design because he’s a Thai designer who has won several international awards. A conversation with him would perhaps help me see opportunities and possible future directions for my career and studio.
