After mankind’s confrontation with changes and uncertainties, and the New Normal lifestyle that ensues, many, including TOA have been contemplating the colors that would suit our new way of life. Colors that are an embodiment of happiness expressed through living spaces that do not only convey people’s identities, but are also emotionally fulfilling, inspiring and reflective of the meaning of life, which has been taken away by devastations and disruptions happening in the world. “THE COLOR OF THOUGHTFUL LIVING” becomes a key mission of TOA, a leading innovator and manufacturer of building paints. Not only do they work to select the trendsetters and year-defining colors, but also to search for the palettes that answer to diverse demands in modern-day living including adaptation towards design direction and of humans’ lifestyles to lead the happiest life possible in The Age of the New Normal.
The project invites Ayutt Mahasom, principal architect and founder of Ayutt and Associates Design (AAd), Jenchieh Hung and Kulthida Songkittipakdee, the Taiwanese and Thai architects and co-founders of HAS Design and Research, Phaithaya Banchakitikun of ATOM Design, Siriyot Chaiamnuay and Arisara Chaktranon who leads the design direction of Onion Studio, and Professor Dr. Tonkao Panin, a professor at Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Architecture, architect and founder of Research Studio Panin, to share their inspirations, navigate and analyse color trends in design alongside a team of experts from TOA. Together this collaboration gives birth to the 12 shades of Trendscope and the meaningful connection between the hues and values from which TOA COLOR TRENDS 2022 is made.
What’s interesting about the collaboration of the five studios is how it gathers thought processes, mindsets and insights in architectural design that are incredibly diverse and different. HAS Design and Research’s philosophy and projects takes factors such as education as well as societal, urban and cultural contexts surrounding each work into consideration, presented and realized with an impressive balance between nature and urbanism. Whereas ATOM Design works with the ideology that aspires to be a part of urban developments. While sharp lines and refined ideas conceive Ayutt and Associates Design (AAd)’s modern and meaningful architecture, Onion Studio’s masterful utilization of user experiences help them materialize living spaces, hotel and hospitality projects all the way to contemporary co-working spaces. There are meticulous interpretations, analysis and profound details of architecture found in the works of Professor Dr. Tonkao Panin, the founder of Research Studio Panin. The quality and eclecticism of their works are reflective of how diverse their brainstorming processes and approaches to architectural design are. Undoubtedly, through brainstorming, the delivered results allow the analysis and inception of the color shades under “THE COLOR OF THOUGHTFUL LIVING,” to help complete and fulfil 2022’s living trends, encompassing every individual experience and detail of every lifestyle.
The five color trends put together especially for the 2022’s New Normal living include BIO-CENTRIC (W9119, W9109), the clean and cool white colors that embody the Hygienic Design concept. Emphasizing the openness, spaciousness and the elevation of people’s physical and mental well being, including a great consideration in natural and environmental sustainability.
UNIVERSE WE (V3096) is presented with a bright purple color that reflects unity and indiscrimination; the color that belongs to all beings, be it humans of all genders, animals, nature; all coming together and transforming ‘Youngverse’ into ‘Universe’—a massive habitat where all lives coexist.
AUTHENTIC IMPRESS (N6161, R2170, O1105) comprises of beige, muted red and brick orange colors that represent an appreciation in cultures and traditions; a reflection of a beautiful amalgamation of the old and the new that leads to new beginnings and inspirations in life.
The muted blue, neutral grey and light green included as a part of SHELTERAL (B4224, N6262, N6316) give a sense of serenity, comfort, warmth and safety, the feeling of being sheltered and protected inside. A friendly space that holds a close connection to nature that makes life less stressful and more relaxing.
Last but not least, UNREFINED WORLD (K7050, N6272, K7055) whose combination of dark grey, navy blue and black is reminiscent of the quintessential simplicity of modern architecture, and at the same time, encapsulates the raw reality and materiality in the world. UNREFINED WORLD is an interpretation of the beauty of imperfection, rawness and unpurifiud elements of materials’ true natures, celebrating how uniqueness and individuality can coexist without losing any meaning.
Each of the five TOA COLOR TRENDS 2022 holds their own identities and are thoughtfully curated by Thailand’s leading architects and TOA’s team of expert analysts. Not only does this creation hope to broaden people’s perceptions and possibilities in architecture and design of the New Normal era, but it is intended to be a symbolic and contemporaneous documentation of what has been going on in the today’s world, localities and cultures.
