The image of a holiday home with three-sided glass walls in the middle of a desert’s vastness and blazing heat is quite an unusual sight. Imagining the temperature of its surrounding environment at first glance, the house didn’t seem like a comfortable place to live in. But thanks to the meticulously thought out and executed design process, and the use of the right materials, La Casa del Desierto designed by OFIS Architects is conceived into an intriguing work of architecture. Surrounded by the tranquil landscape of the Gorafe Desert of Spain, the residence is available for anyone to rent and experience the stay.
Despite the extensive and dry surroundings, the building is designed to be a juxtaposition of its environment with the use of glossy and airy materials to reflect the outside panoramic view. The house’s architecture takes the simplistic route with a hexagonal platform that outlines the floor and roof structure. A setback creates a patio that runs around the house while the interior layout opens the living space up to take in the 360-degree perspective with the massive curtain walls. The interior program houses three functional spaces; the bedroom, living room and the bathroom, which is situated at the center of the house.
Using glass as the principal element, the architect worked together with Guardian Glass to choose the materials with the most suitable physical and aesthetic properties to achieve the envisioned design. The SunGuard eXtraSelective SuperNeutral 60 (SNX 60) and ClimaGuard® Premium2 are two types of glass that both possess interior temperature control properties, which contribute to the building’s lessened energy use, as well as an effective prevention of outside heat and cool weather. The glasses also keep the amount of natural light in the interior space in a moderate amount and perfect level of thermal comfort.
In terms of energy use, solar cells are installed on the roof to generate electricity, allowing the house to be operated with clean, sustainable energy, while rain water storage and wastewater treatment enables efficient use of water for the maintenance and cleaning of the house. La Casa del Desierto is an ideal integration of architectural design and sustainable technologies where the right architectural elements and material use end up creating a house that offers users new outlooks and experiences with all the needed living conveniences. Maintaining this balance is one of the challenges in architectural design. It is something achieved through a collaboration from all parties who together navigate through trial and error to seek for new possibilities in design, which is exactly what OFIS Architects and Guardian Glass had done with La Casa del Desierto.
