On May 16th, 2024, the Taiwan Design Research Institute, in collaboration with art4d, hosted the Design Perspectives x Golden Pin Salon Bangkok 2024 at the Auditorium on the 4th floor of the AUA Language Center, Rajadamri, Bangkok. This event served as a platform for a panel discussion, where four distinguished designers explored and shared their views on the topic ‘Unlocking Creative Potential: Values, Ideas, and Attitudes that Shape a New Design Territory for a Better World.’

The panel featured Chen Wei, an architect from Metahouse Architects & Associates; Johnason Lo, founder of Taiwan’s first JL DESIGN Motion Graphic Studio; Chatpong Chuenrudeemol, founder of CHAT Architects; and Krit Phutpim, founder of Dots Design Studio, a product design studio based in Thailand.

Discussions expanded to involve the Golden Pin Design Award (GPDA) committee and delegates from Thailand’s architectural and design institutions including the Architect Council of Thailand, The Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage, the Thai Graphic Designers Association, the Thai Association of Landscape Architects, and the Thailand Interior Designers’ Association. These discussions focused on the strategic direction of design competitions and policy initiatives aimed at enhancing the global stature of Thai designers.

Siam Attariya and Piyapong Bhumichitra, veteran designers and members of the Golden Pin Design Award judging panel, shed light on the selection process for this year’s competition. They emphasized the importance of seeing more innovative works that address social and environmental issues and highlighted significant design trends, such as the use of local materials, traditional architectural styles, and artisanal techniques. They reinforced how the quality of work from Thai designers meets international standards and that participating in such competitions opens up new perspectives and design ideas, positioning designers in a competitive market and enhancing their potential for quality development.

Kulthida Songkittipakdee, a representative from the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage

Salyawate Prasertwitayakarn from the Architect Council of Thailand stated that currently, the council collaborates with APEC Architects, a central architectural body that sets professional standards and fosters collaboration among architects both domestically and internationally. He emphasized the importance of leveraging insights from the Association of Siamese Architects under the Royal Patronage, particularly following their recent Architect Expo 2024. Kulthida Songkittipakdee, a representative from the association, detailed their efforts in creating platforms for emerging designers across various fields and the initiation of the ‘Young Architect Talk’ project. This initiative brought together design professionals from Malaysia, the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian nations to exchange experiences and foster a deeper understanding of regional design practices, sparking innovation and fostering an informed and connected community.

Akarapon Kritruenonwong, President of the Thai Graphic Designers Association (ThaiGa); Numchai Sansupa, a representative from the Thai Association of Landscape Architects (TALA); and Korakoth Kunalungkarn, President of the Thailand Interior Designers’ Association (TIDA), discussed the significant benefits of design competitions. They highlighted how these contests not only showcase creative work but also elevate Thai designers to a professional international level. They advocated for continued participation in both international and Asia-Pacific regional competitions, noting that such involvement enhances networking opportunities and expands the international market presence for Thai designers.
