The COVID-19 pandemic has undeniably affected practically every aspect of people’s livelihoods. In search of answers of how mankind will continue to live in the ongoing pandemic era and face the future that lies ahead, art4d joins forces with SCG D’COR for ‘art4d x SCG D’COR Intelligent Skin : Reimagine the façade design for tomorrow.’ The project invites leading architects from four studios, namely, Pitupong Chaowakul of Supermachine Studio, Chatphong Chuenrudeemol of CHAT Architects, Yarinda Boonnag of Imaginary Objects and Suparat Chinathaworn of  party / space / design, to reimagine four different types of spaces: Hotel, House/Residence, Workplace/Co-working space and Café. Using SCG D’COR’s alternative materials, the architects may brilliantly express ideas through their facade designs. Following are brief concept descriptions of the works realized from their interpretations of ‘Reimagine the façade design for tomorrow.’

Pitupong Chaowakul

Hotel – Supermachine Studio

For Pitupong Chaowakul of Supermachine Studio, he believes that COVID-19 acts as a catalyst that pushes people to adopt a new lifestyle and tap into scenarios they have never done before, from online classrooms or the work from home approach. Hotels are among the spaces that are forced to evolve and keep up with the changes brought about by the worldwide pandemic.

Pitupong proposes the idea of a hotel design for the next three decades where the intelligent building skin comes with automatic opening and closing mechanisms, operated in real-time and in relation to outside climatic conditions or interior functionalities with SCG D’COR’ s decorative materials used for the principal materials of the wall system.

Workplace/Co-working space – CHAT Architects

While working from home prevents people from meeting in person, one of the lessons that Chatphong Chuenrudeemol of CHAT Architects learns from the experience is how the method offers a more relaxing work environment and atmosphere. Such a change has significant impacts on one’s improved efficiency and creativity.

When given the chance to reimagine Workplace/Co-working space, he came up with the idea to modify the patio at CHAT Architects’ office into a more relaxing micro office. By using SCG D’COR’s decorative materials to create a homier feel and greater openness to the surrounding natural air and light.

House/Residence – Imaginary Objects

A home is considered to be the most comforting space yet the pandemic has proven that that our living space can also be seen as the most dangerous place. The pandemic has unwillingly turned houses into, not just a living space but a workspace or even a school. How should a house be reimagined to better correspond with the new way of life?

Yarinda Boonnag from Imaginary Objects navigates new possibilities and answers in House/Residence design through a redesign of a building that is home to an extended family. The spatial allocation clearly divides the common and private spaces with open common areas that incorporate natural ventilation and the use of SCG D’COR’s decorative materials. In turn, bringing dwellers  thermal comfort through efficient sun and rain protection system, which enables the usability of living spaces throughout the day.

Apart from redefined distances and boundaries that better resonate with the New Normal lifestyle, Suparat applies the Intelligent Skin concept to cafe design with the use of SCG D’COR’s decorative materials with the facade. Allowing it to help identifying spatial functionalities while offering users a safer social distancing and a sense of connectivity, simultaneously.
