TOM EMERSON AND STEPHANIE MACDONALD COFOUNDED 6A ARCHITECTS IN 2001 AFTER HAVING FIRST MET AT THE ROYAL COLLEGE OF ART. THEIR FIRST PROJECT WAS THE DESIGN OF A SMALL RETAIL SPACE FOR A MULTI-BRAND FLAGSHIP STORE ON SAVILE ROW AND, THROUGHOUT THE NOW 17 YEARS OF THEIR PRACTICE, THE STUDIO’S ARCHITECTURAL CONTRIBUTES TO LONDON’S ART AND CULTURAL SCENE HAVE BEEN INCREDIBLY VIBRANT. WHAT SHAPES AND DIFFERENTIATES THE IDENTITY OF THEIR STUDIO FROM OTHER PRACTICES IS THEIR WORKS OF EXHIBITION AND SPATIAL DESIGN FOR GALLERIES AND THE RADICAL APPROACH THEY TAKE TOWARD HISTORY AND CONVERSATION, WORKING DIRECTLY WITH MATERIALS SO AS TO CREATE AS LITTLE INTERPRETATION AS POSSIBLE. THEIR WORKS HAVE RECEIVED COUNTLESS PROMINENT AWARDS RANGING FROM THE AJ/CORUS 40 UNDER 40 WINNER IN 2005 TO THE RIBA AWARD WHICH THEY HAVE WON CONSECUTIVELY SINCE 2011. THEY WERE FURTHER NOMINATED FOR THE MIES VAN DE ROHE AWARD IN 2011, 2013 AND 2015 WHILE THE BUILDING THEY DESIGNED FOR GERMAN PHOTOGRAPHER, JUERGEN TELLER WAS SHORTLISTED FOR 2017’S STIRLING PRIZE. APART FROM THEIR ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE, TOM EMERSON IS ALSO CURRENTLY WORKING AS AN ARCHITECTURE AT ETH ZÜRICH AND HAS BEEN INVITED TO TEACH AT RENOWNED INSTITUTIONS. EMERSON IS THE SECOND ARCHITECT TO EVER RECEIVE THE CONRAD FERDINAND MEYER PRIZE, A LITERARY PRIZE COMMEMORATING THE SWISS POER CONRAD FERDINAND MEYER THAT HAS BEEN AWARDED ANNUALLY SINCE 1938.

PASCAL FLAMMER ARCHITECT
PASCAL FLAMMER IS A SWISS ARCHITECT WHO IS DRIVEN BY THE SEARCH FOR SPECIFIC VALUES FOR CERTAIN CONDITIONS, SITUATIONS AND PROBLEMS THAT ARE RELATED TO HUMANS IN BOTH THE DIMENSIONS OF AN INDIVIDUAL’S EXISTENCE AND SOCIAL NORMS. BEFORE MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF THROUGH HIS OWN ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE, FLAMMER WORKED AT THE OFFICE OF VALERIO OLGIATI, A RENOWNED SWISS ARCHITECT, BACK IN 1998. HE FOUNDED HIS OWN STUDIO IN 2005 FOLLOWING WHICH HIS WORKS BEGAN TO GAIN RECOGNITION AND WERE GRANTED MAJOR ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS INCLUDING THE SWISS ART AWARD IN 2006 AND THE PHILIPPE ROTTHIER EUROPEAN PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURE IN 2014. APART FROM HIS PRACTICE, FLAMMER HAS BEEN INVITED TO TEACH AT A GREAT NUMBER OF LEADING INSTITUTIONS SUCH AS HARVARD UNIVERSITY, SANDBERG INSTITUUT, ETH ZÜRICH AND PRINCETON UNIVERSITY. WHEN IT COMES TO ARCHITECTURE, FLAMMER UNBINDS HIMSELF FROM ANY PARTICULAR DOGMA OR METHODOLOGY. HIS DESIGN PROCESS IS DRIVEN BY AN ATTEMPT TO CREATE A MOMENT OF CURIOSITY AS HE VIEWS THE MAKING OF ARCHITECTURE AS A PROPOSAL ALLOWING FOR HIM TO THINK THROUGH NEW TYPOLOGIES AND EVENTUALLY PRODUCE NEW POSSIBLE WAYS OF LIVING.

‘AMBIGUITY’ AND ‘ANOMALY’ HAVE SERVED AS THE CORES BEHIND THE CONCEPTUALIZATION AND MATERIALIZATION OF THE ARCHITECTURE OF OFFICE KERSTEN GEERS DAVID VAN SEVEREN SINCE ITS FOUNDATION IN 2002. THE STUDIO’S DISTINCT CHARACTER IS DERIVED FROM THE SIMPLICITY OF THEIR GEOMETRIC FORMS THAT POSSESS A GREAT COMPLEXITY OF SOCIETAL ISSUES AND ARCHITECTURAL THEORIES. SUCH HAS LED OFFICE TO OBTAIN THEIR STATUS AS ONE OF BELGIUM’S MOST SUCCESSFUL AND PROMISING ARCHITECTURE STUDIOS. BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN KERSTEN GEERS AND DAVID VAN SEVEREN WERE STUDENTS OF ESCUELA TÉCNICA SUPERIOR DE ARQUITECTURA DE MADRID (ETSAM) WHERE THEY PURSUED THEIR STUDIES AFTER GRADUATING FROM BELGIUM’S UNIVERSITY OF GHENT, ABALOS & HERREROS, ONE OF SPAIN’S MOST PROMINENT ARCHITECTS OF THE 1990S, BECAME AN INFLUENCE DURING A TIME THAT PLAYED A SIGNIFICANT PART IN THE EVOLUTION OF THEIR ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE. THE CONTENT AND SCALE OF THEIR WORKS VARY FROM FURNITURE AND ARCHITECTURE TO MASTERPLANNING PROJECTS. THE STUDIO HAS RECEIVED A GREAT NUMBER OF AWARDS INCLUDING THE BELGIAN PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURE IN 2009, 2013 AND 2015, TO THE VENICE BIENNALE FOR ARCHITECTURE’S SILVER LION AWARD IN 2010 GIVEN TO THE ‘MOST PROMISING YOUNG PRACTICE’ FOR THEIR REPUTABLE GARDEN PAVILION PROJECT. THE TWO PARTNERS HAVE FURTHER BEEN INVITED TO TEACH AT GLOBALLY RENOWNED UNIVERSITIES SUCH AS HARVARD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF DESIGN.
